Organization name: Development Centre of South Iceland
 
Description of organization: Mission, background, legal status, organisational structure and geographically area.
 
Development Centre of South Iceland is a public company established in 1980 and is owned by 14 municipalities in southern Iceland and partly financed through the Regional Development Office in Iceland and partly by the municipalities. The company’s overall role is to increase the area’s competitiveness, quality of life and overall attractiveness, as a place for living and for investment.
The Fund’s Board of Directors is appointed by the communities.
 
The general manager is responsible for the daily operation of the fund and the centre now employs 5 specialists.

DCSI headquarters is located in the town of Selfoss. Selfoss is conveniently located within the 14 municipalities of the southern part of Iceland as well as being the main service centre for the region. The working area of the organisation is vast, from Þorlákshöfn to Kirkjubæjarklaustur including Vestmannaeyjar, counting almost 25.000 inhabitants. The organisation also holds out offices in Vestmannaeyjar and Hella. Businesses in this region are mainly small and medium sized companies, often with limited resources. South of Iceland is initially an agricultural area and is still a big player in dairy, meat and vegetable production. Part of the region also holds a significant part of the fishing and fish production of the country. Over the last decade the service sector has become a significant part of the GDP of Iceland and the South region is getting increasingly popular as a recreational area with its many holiday homes and numerous tourist attractions including the Golden Circle and the national park Þingvellir.
 
Purpose and function of organisation:
DCSI is the centre of expertise for companies and individuals that are starting their own companies in the area as well as facilitate current companies with their strategies, business plans, finance, and marketing and overall assist with improving their performance.
The main function of the centre is to strengthen rural development and industries in South Iceland by which prosperity in the region will increase, by assisting local government’s individuals, enterprises, organizations and other interest groups with their business and entrepreneurial ideas. In addition, DCSI takes the initiative and seeks ways to inform, acquaint and assist parties in the region concerning innovation and introducing new developments in operation and management of business.
 
Competences of organisation:
The human resource is the greatest asset of the organisation. There is a high level of competence in DCSI. The expertise includes education in business, business administration, politics, international relations, logistics and engineering as well as vast experience in different professions.
 
Co-operation and network activities of organisation:
The DCSI is interested in participating in different international project that serves the interest of the region. The organisation has participated in some European funded interreg projects with the objectives to create and develop regional clusters of business communities (SCRI and NEST), a regional project with the objective to establish and develop a regional arts and crafts cluster in the Southern area, women network as well as different projects with the intentions to create networks for increased innovation and cooperation with national bodies such as the ministries of agriculture, industries and commerce, communications, fisheries and foreign affairs.
